Social networking sites reveal personal data

It does not take a hacker to dig personal information out of social networking sites such as Facebook, Orkut, Twitter, My Space or Linkedin. Often, it’s all over there for anyone to find it.

Social networking sites help connect with friends or people already known to users and also help further develop the network by connecting to new people. While some of the social networking sites are generally for connecting with people and sharing information, others such as Linkedin help develop business or professional connections.

Even though social networking sites may differ in their purpose, they all have one aspect in common. Although the features of social networking sites differ, they all facilitate sharing of information among their users. Most of these sites allow users to post text, images, videos, and other information to their profiles. Often developing networks require providing personal information. This information is thus available for people looking for them for various purposes. This could range from less harmful spam to even identity theft. Personal information available on such sites could be put to various uses. SingleStat.us, a website which tracked people who recently changed their relationship status online is an example. The site was shut down 10 days after its launch following protest from My Space.

Users generally provide information about their location, work, hobbies, and friends. This kind of information could easily be used by another person for impersonation. Users could also unwittingly reveal their daily routine. It is also possible that friends may post information making a user vulnerable. Often information posted cannot be edited or removed. If access to the account is unrestricted, almost everyone has access to information. Young people often have less reservation about providing personal information online. This also means that employers, both prospective and current, relatives, friends, and children, can all see all the information, which is not perhaps intended for all. A prospective employer viewing a drunken photo would not be great for a user. This may also be due to lack of knowledge about protecting privacy online. Most of these sites allow information posted to be made private so only a restricted group can view it.

A user wary about providing personal information online says, “I'm very eerie about what I put on the internet, period. I havn't given out more than my name and age. I don't give where I live, my telephone number or anything. People just can' be trusted”. “At the most I would disclose my fake name and mail id..and photographs on trusted sites..but I never give my phone no...had hell lot of bad experiences!”, says another user. There are people who find that some amount of personal information revealed might be useful. A user says, “Disclosing your interests and hobbies could be a good affair, you could get new opportunities and dimensions to them!”

A request for personal information could appear to be harmless as a tweet in Twitter which says, “saw your tweet on health its confusing ya and needing a personal asst, shoot me your contact info and i'll get ya over information”. A concerned user says, “I've got this sudden paranoia that too much information about my personal life is available online so I'm slowly deleting old accounts...”

A study by security software company Sophos revealed how naive people are about giving away personal information. Sophos created a Facebook profile and contacted people. According to Sophos, nearly 72 percent of those surveyed provided email addresses, 84 per cent gave away their date of birth, about 87 per cent provided information about education or work. Nearly 78 per cent provided their address and 23 per cent provided their phone number and 26 per cent provided their instant messaging screen name. The study also shows that such networks could also reveal corporate data, which people might give away unwittingly.

A survey by global market intelligence firm, Synovate, asked social networkers to name the sites they belonged to. Users in some places seemed to favour multiple memberships and some seemed to stick to one or two major ones. The markets where social networking enthusiasts favoured many sites are UAE, India, Indonesia, and Bulgaria.

Only about half of those respondents who are members of social networking sites agreed that online social networking may pose risks. Brazilians topped the list with nearly 79 per cent being nervous about online social networking. In the US, nearly 69% acknowledged the danger while in Poland about 62 per cent were nervous about such sites. The Indians were the least concerned, with only 19 percent acknowledging the risks posed by networking sites. Nearly 57 per cent of Indians were comfortable with providing their personal information online.

The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISSCC) warns users against using their real name and date of birth on social networking sites. The ISSCC cautions users against giving out personal information unless they have initiated the contact and are sure you know who they are dealing with.

The logic here is, “You wouldn’t disclose this information to someone in the street so why do it online?” Would the users change their behaviour only if they find that their information is being used inappropriately? As a user puts it, “I've referred to My Space, almost since the beginning, as 'Legalised stalking', because people can find out what is going on in your life without even talking to you”. [Source]

Orkut's commenting on photos directly in activity stream

The latest buzz on Orkut’s social networking service is that it has added a new feature that enables inline photo comments.

With this newly added feature, you can save your time and energy by directly replying on comments for the photos you see in your activity stream.

“Reading the latest comments on your friend’s photos in your activity stream, but not sure how to reply? We’ve just made this easier for you do by letting you make comments directly in your activity stream,” says Robson, Software Engineer at Orkut, in the blog post.

So you don’t need to visit your friend’s album to reply to the latest comment, instead just do it right from the home page, as soon as you log in. Enabling this inline photo comment feature is the simple “add comment” option in the activity stream provided by Orkut.

Orkut, the social networking site run by Google, has been slowly and steadily introducing new features and apps to its service. However, the tech world gets to see more updates from Facebook and MySpace, the competing social networking sites.

This month, Facebook updated its home page with a new layout, has got Fire Eagle embedded into it and introduced new privacy controls to allow users to open their profiles freely.

Facebook, Orkut being used for viral marketing

Ratan Tata has worked out a viral marketing strategy to promote the Nano at the lowest cost. Like Anand Mahindra, who used the online medium to grab consumer mind-share ahead of Xylo’s launch, Tata is using social networking sites Facebook and Orkut to help build up a network of prospective customers to virally market the small car.

While the official Tata Nano Facebook profile counts 3,840 fans as its members — including Vismaya Firodia Bakshi, younger daughter of Kinetic group chairman Arun Firodia, and Vishal Gondal, CEO of Indiagames, the Orkut site lists 4,822 members.

Tata Motors also has a micro-site for Nano on its website. It has been running a contest for customers to correctly guess the price of the three Nano variants. “We have received over 10,000 entries for the contest that has been running for the past 10 days. The contest closed at 5 pm on March 22,” said Debasis Ray, head, corporate communication, Tata Motors. Winners of the contest are being invited to the launch function in Mumbai on Monday.

On the Facebook and Orkut Nano sites, a frequently asked question is how to book the car. Tata Motors plans to post on Monday a list of dealers and other agents. On the Nano micro site, a response form allows potential customers to be alerted once bookings are open. “Most of the enquiries that we have received are mostly from India,” said Ray. But there are several Facebook groups from several countries in the Americas and elsewhere, who are Nano fans.
Since Tatas have decided to use banks such as State Bank of India as booking agents, Ratan Tata has worked out a plan to help keep the dealers pacified. The company is set to launch Nano collectibles that will be sold at dealer outlets. This will allow dealers to offer a unique selling proposition to their customers who walk in to get a first look and feel of the car. The Nano goodies, as they are being called, will be given first to the contest winners, and include Nano watches, caps and T-shirts, among others. Ray refused to comment on the collectibles range which is to be unveiled on Monday.

In addition to attractive packages for financing of the cars to be announced by public sector banks, Tata Capital, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, and Tata Motors Finance too are expected to announce financing schemes for the Nano, Tata group officials told FC.

iGoogle Gaming Themes Launched by Google

Google is set to launch new gaming gadgets for iGoogle, its customizable home page, at the Game Developers Conference 2009 starting March 23 to 27 at San Francisco.

Google vice president of Search Products and User Experience, Marissa Mayer, will show the new collection of gaming themes for iGoogle at the GDC 2009. Google's iGoogle is a customizable homepage for users and the new gaming themes have been developed using OpenSocial.

Though we do not have the details, you can be sure that something significant is coming up. Google had revamped the iGoogle interface six months back with a bunch of new features.

After Google added OpenSocial based applications to Orkut, it was about time to bring the fun element on the iGoogle page. Stay tuned and we'll update you about gaming themes for iGoogle.

Next time your parents tell you not to ‘waste time’ on all those computer games, you can say, “But it’s good for me!” And you could be right, not cheeky. Papers read by experts in human behaviour at a conference of the American Psychological Association, said students in Stds. V to VII who regularly played video games showed better problem-solving abilities than those who did not.

It worked for college students too — as well as adults like surgeons, whose skill with their hands improved if they played games that called for quick wrist control. So the message seems to be: you are never too old to play video games!

That is not to say that adults and the young can or should play the same games. Unfortunately there are so many thousands of games out there — on the Internet, at games arcades or games that need special machines like the PlayStation or XBox. Another survey, found that almost one in five of those who bought very popular (but very violent) adult games like “Grand Theft Auto” were school children.

Fun and safe

That is why it is so important to look in the right place for games you can play — at your age — or get help from parents in finding them. For most of us games consoles are too costly — and elders don’t like us going to games arcades. The best option is Internet. The popular Internet site Yahoo has created a site for children (http://kids.yahoo.com/games) which is both fun and safe. The largest Indian games site is Zapak ( www.zapak.com ) and it has a huge selection of games for all ages... including games based on current cricket series or the Olympics. But some one has to scan them and decide what is fine for one’s kids, depending on age and taste.

The other Indian resource is India games ( www.indiagames.com ) which has a subscription service so you can be sure you get just the games that are okay for you. Both these sites also offer games on CD or DVD which is great because once you have them your parents don’t need to waste money on Internet time.

Sometimes one can nicely combine information and entertainment (infotainment) . And the great news is some of the best such sites on the Internet are products of Indian brains. A young engineer from Kerala, Joseph Pally, who went to the U.S. for higher studies, stayed back to create a web site called “Zcubes” ( www.zcubes.com ).

It is an awesome page where you can browse, paint, draw, play, prepare school project work and presentations with lovely pictures and funny text ... in fact many of the users are teachers! Check it out — it’s all free... The other really exciting news is about a site called Toondoo ( www.toondoo.com ) created by a team in Chennai. The Product Manager Shankar says the site is a great place to create your own comic strip or cartoons.

With games like these, homework will never feel like — work!

In recent years, online social networking has created powerful new ways to communicate and share information. Most social network websites provide many ways for users to interact, such as emails and instant messaging services. Social networking websites are being used regularly by millions of people, and it now seems that social networking will be an enduring part of everyday life.

Google's social networking service, Orkut which kicked off as just a 20 percent time project of Orkut Büyükkökten, its creator, has come to be known, as the world's most popular social networking site.

Indian software developers prefer Orkut

What started in 2004 as a mission to help users connect by building online communities of people who share interests and activities and organize information, today has gone to become one of the biggest social network giants in India. 17.06 percent of Orkut members are Indians, making us the second largest nation on its network.

According to the latest comscore estimates, in India, Orkut has reigned as the most visited social networking site in December 2008 with more than 12.8 million visitors, an increase of 81 percent from the previous year. Orkut has been facing stiff competition from Facebook in the recent past, where it managed to lose its share to the social networking site. But Orkut, which is known to follow one basic mantra of making the user, the owner, and deliver what he demands, managed to turn the table upside down, with its constant innovation and vision.

One of the key reasons for Orkut's success is a belief that good ideas can, and should, come from anywhere, be it the users themselves, and the stress is always on creating something new and innovative. Orkut's future rests on the creativity of their engineers and how they grasp and weave out the products around what the users want and would enjoy working with. In the Orkut universe a user defines and derives his own experience.

The constant feedback and encouragement from the users has enabled innovation and fueled passion at Orkut, to enhance the user's experience and social interaction at every step.

To begin with, Orkut has introduced a number of privacy features, giving users the right to decide on accessibility to individual profiles.

Over a period of time Orkut once again saw that its audience graph go up three times the size of its nearest competitor in the category. Other social networks like Facebook.com which captured the #2 position with 4 million visitors, up 150 percent versus year ago, followed by local social networking site Bharatstudent.com with 3.3 million visitors (up 88 percent) and hi5.com with 2 million visitors (up 182 percent).

Social Networking sites have seen an increase of 51 percent from the previous year, to more than 19 million visitors in December 2008, as per by comscore estimates.

Cashing in on IPL fever Google works on monetising Orkut

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket season round the corner, Google’s social networking platform, Orkut, is hoping to turn itself into a hot-bed for advertisers.

In discussion with IPL to create brand positioning campaigns and even an IPL profile page for Orkut users, Google is serious about monetising its social media portal. “Last year, we built a stronger base of marketers and invested in internet advertising. In 2009, we should make revenues from our social media platform,” says Google India Managing Director Shailesh Rao.

Google is banking on converting its vast network of Adwords advertisers to Orkut, where they can place targeted and contextual advisements on various social communities and user profiles, reaching individual customers directly. “This would be through minimum intrusion, as we will (only) allow advertising at the lower half of the user’s profile page, that too at an infrequent rate,” adds Mahesh Narayanan, senior industry manager, Google. Online display adverts are a $70-million market today and Google is gunning for a bulk share.

Around 10 entities, including FMCG, telecom and movie producers, says Narayanan, will be the big-ticket advertisers for Orkut in 2009. “You will see Google helping airlines sell tickets and packages on Orkut, financial services and products to users, and insurance and brokerage firms to offer services to targeted users,” says Rao. According to comScore data, in 2008, Google sites ranked as the top property in India, with nearly 20 million visitors. Orkut registered nearly 10 million visitors, marking a growth of 39 per cent. Orkut Apps, the blog that has become popular for software developers to market their social applications, has also opened new revenue streams for Google.

An estimated 45 million internet subscribers drove the online advertising market to Rs 240 crore in 2008, and according to Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) estimates, it could touch Rs 2,500 crore by 2011. But a harsher financial outlook in 2009, combined with an expected fall in online advertising, is forcing the networks to focus more on making money from existing subscribers than on adding new users.

But market research firm, IDC, in its report claims that the use of social networking sites will continue to grow, but advertising will not necessarily expand along with it. Their analysts say: “The fact that people use social networking services for communication puts them in a mindset that is less receptive to advertising than when they are using web sites like Yahoo or Google.”

This explains the effort undertaken by social networks to monetise their user base. In an earlier interview, BigAdda had also confessed to the need to engage its users to churn value for advertisers on its networking portal.

Shivanandan Pare, its chief operations officer, told Business Standard: “Pricing for generic banner advertising on social networking sites is relatively low as compared to other sites, because marketers believe users are logging in for communication rather than commerce.”

BigAdda is campaigning with brands like Intel, Nokia and Lenovo, where these interact with users via special promotions, free multimedia download and through brand polls.

The Supreme Court of India has denied legal protection to a 19 year old computer science student facing a lawsuit for comments left on a group page he created on the Google owned social network Orkut, according to The Times of India. Local press has identified the young man by the name Ajith D (a common name) and report that his alleged offense was creating a group page where other visitors left "libelous" comments critical of militant right-wing political party Shiv Sena.

Indians around the internet are condemning the ruling as a blow against freedom of speech and democracy. It certainly appears to be a dangerous misunderstanding of the nature of the internet on the part of the court and a bad precedent in the most populous democracy in the world.

The Times of India quotes the court as having offered the following statement to the young man. "You are a computer student and you know how many people access internet portals. Hence, if someone files a criminal action on the basis of the content, then you will have to face the case. You have to go before the court and explain your conduct."

We're not sure what the number of potential readers has to do with anything and we find it pretty frightening that a court that would say "you're a computer student so you know how many people use the internet" had any say at all in such matters.

According to reports the comments in question were left by anonymous users and the group's owner claimed they were legitimate exercises of free speech. The youth arm of the political party facing criticism apparently filed suit under a law pertaining to "hurting public sentiment."

There are more than 1,000 groups on Orkut that show up in a search for "Shiv Sena," some for and some very much against the party. We're writing based on relatively light local reporting, so it's possible that the group started by Ajith D was particularly heinous. On principle, though, we presume that the young man should not face legal charges for anonymous comments left by others - no matter what those comments were.

Late last year Facebook shut down a group on that site that appeared to be celebrating acts of genocide against Bosnian Muslims. People lost their Facebook accounts and the group was closed due to violation of the site's Terms of Service against advocating violence - but filing legal charges against the group's admin would have been an entirely different matter.

India's Supreme Court ruling that the Orkut group owner could be sued for anonymous comments sounds like a terrible ruling to us and the kind of thing that web users all around the world should be concerned about. India is the world's second most populous country and its largest democracy. It's a large and complicated country, though. While the recent rise of the Indian middle class and tech sectors have received substantial attention, the country still has one of the highest child malnutrition rates in the world - twice that of Sub Saharan Africa according to the World Bank.

Democracies are complicated; the United States has one of the highest rates of imprisonment of any industrialized countries in the world, holds a shockingly disproportionate number of its young black men in prison and was founded on an experiment in ethnic cleansing. Who has the moral high ground?

While big picture questions are important, this particular case is as well. Will Google intervene in defense of Ajith D's use of its website? Will the US government, now more than ever advocating the use of free-flowing information technology to advance human well being, have anything to say about this potentially terrible precedent being set? We suspect neither will occur.

It's a good idea for us as individual web users to remember that even as new internet technology sets so much information and so many voices free, even in a celebrated democracy - online freedom may be one repressive legal ruling away from being put at serious risk. No matter where you might live - do you trust that your local judiciary would understand the issues in a case like this? We don't.

How to Save or Download Protected Orkut Album Images

A friend ( reader) was asking me "How to Save or Download Protected Images from orkut albums?". I myself faced a problem when I wanted to Save this nice Image for my stock photo Collections. I was Unable to do that as the image was protected . So I decided to Apply Some trick to get The Photo.

Normally, you can save Images/Pictures from Orkut (or any website) by right clicking the photograph and saying "Save Image As.." but in the case of protected Orkut images, all you will see on the desktop is a blank 1x1 pixel placeholder image called spaceball.gif

Reason : When a Flickr member has set download permissions to disallow his/her photos from being downloaded, a transparent image is overlaid on the actual photo so the right-click method fails.

Solution : You may either use the good-old Print Screen / Screenshot or any of the methods below to defeat the Flickr image protection...

For Firefox: Goto Tools -> Page Info -> Media - Scroll down until you see that Flickr image in the Media Preview Window. Click the Save As button.

In IE, Opera, Safari or Firefox: Right click the Flickr web page and chose "View HTML source" - now search for "spaceball.gif" in the HTML source. You'll find the full location of the protected image enclosed in the tag just before the tag that encloses the spaceball image. (see screenshot)

Now all you have to Do is just get the Actual image Link and Download it.

How To Send a Scrap »

If you want to scrap anyone, you need to navigate to his or her profile link and search out the scrap box as shown in the figure. Write a scrap and press submit or preview button if you want to send the scrap or preview the scrap respectively. You can also send HTML enabled scraps if the member to whom you are sending a scrap is in your friend list.

If a member has left you a scrap already, there is an easier way to scrap him/her. If you notice the screenshot, you will see a reply button below the scrap. Clicking that button, a scrap box opens below the scrap itself. You just need to write your message and click send option.

How to Delete Scraps »

Deleting Sent Scraps »

If you want to delete the scraps you sent in someone’s scrapbook, you need to navigate to the scrapbook of the member and search for your scrap manually. When you find your scrap, you can press the delete button along the scrap to remove the scrap.

Deleting Scraps in Your Scrapbook »

You can delete scraps one by one by clicking on the delete button alongside the scraps. In case you want the bulk deletion of scraps you can choose the select all option on the upper left side of your scrapbook (refer the screenshot above).
For more effective deletion, you can choose to view 20 or 30 scraps (depending on the need) and then choose select all option and delete those scraps.

The above methods come in handy when you are monitoring small number of scraps. In case you want to delete a huge number of scraps which if done manually will be time consuming and tiring job then here is an interesting and quicker way out.

How to Report a Spam Scrap »

If you receive spam scraps, you must report them to orkut. This way, we can have some control on spam and help orkut by making it more clean. To report a spam scrap, you need to select the respective scrap and choose report spam option. This will not only remove the scrap but also report the member to orkut. (refer to above screenshot)

How to Add Friends »

If you want to add a particular member as your friend then you have to navigate to the profile of that member. On the left hand side menu you will see an option to add that member as your friend.

Now click on add as a friend option and you will be redirected to a page shown below. Choose the appropriate category and add a short note which will be sent to the member along with your friend request.

Now wait until the member approves your request. As soon as he/she approves, you will see him/her in your friend list.

How to Accept Friend Requests »

Whenever someone adds you as a friend, you get a friend request. You can approve or disapprove that request by navigating to the home page of your profile. You will see the pending friend requests as shown in screenshot

According to your wish, you can accept or reject the friend request.

Testimonials are like the sticky notes which are written by a friend, for a friend which describe him/her in a few words. These testimonials are placed below the profile description of a member

How to Write a Testimonial »

If you want to write a testimonial to a friend, you need to navigate to the profile of the member. If you see the left hand side menu bar you will notice one of the options to write a testimonial. Click on that option, write your comment and submit. Your testimonial will be shown below the profile of the member if approved by your friend.

How to Delete a Testimonial »

You can delete testimonials which you wrote about your friends and those which your friends wrote about you. To delete any of these testimonials, you need to navigate to the testimonial page. Here the default page that opens is for the testimonials which you wrote about your friends. You can delete any of these testimonials by clicking delete button alongside the respective testimonials. If you want to delete the testimonials written by your friends for you, you need to navigate to the bottom of the page and you will see an option to view testimonials which your friends wrote about you. Go to that page and delete the desired testimonials.

How to Create a Community »

If you want to create a community, you need to navigate to the communities’ page. If you have a look on the left hand side menu, you’ll see a option to create a community. Click on that option and fill in the details on the next page. Click the create option to create your community.

How to Join a Community »

If you want to join a community, you can do this by navigating to the community’s homepage. If you take a look at left hand side menu bar, you will notice an option to join this Community. Click on that option to join the community. All your joined communities are enlisted in your communities’ page.
Note: You cannot join more than 1000 communities.

How to Unjoin a Community »

If you wish to un-join a particular community, you need to navigate to the homepage of the respective community. If you have a look at the left hand side menu bar, you will notice an option to un-join the community. Click on that option to un-join the community.

How to Post a topic in a Community »

To post a topic in a joined community, you need to navigate to the home page of the community. Below the community description, you will see an option to view all topics. Click on that option. Now, if you look at the bottom of the page, you will see a option called new topic. Click on that option to create a new topic.

If you want to post your views on any topic in a community, you need to open the topic. At the bottom of the page, you will see a reply option. Click on that option and post your reply.

Send Invisible Orkut Scrap (Magic Scrap)

Orkut's spam control feature does not allow people to scrap without any texts. Orkut applied this feature to control spamming. yup, you can never post scraps without writing anything in it, which means you can never scrap an invisible scrap.
But still, we can do that using some simple tricks. Here, on Orkut Guide, we will guide you to do this. Lets learn how...

Step1: Open your orkut scrapbook.

Step2: Write [i] and submit it, an invisible scrap would be posted.

Note: Don't Write Anything Else [i]

You can try these various combinations also if u want to send a big no of invisible scraps, as after your few submissions it will start displaying the message "message sent too recently". So try these combinations out:

Show a cool STAR in your scraps: Just write “& # 9 7 3 3″ without spaces and quotes in your orkut scarp writing text for testing directly in your friend’s scrapbook. And now submit your scrap. You will see a cool star icon showing up in your scrap. It is one of the simplest of orkut tricks. Isn’t it?.

Unlimited pictures in orkut album : By default an orkut user can upload only 12 pictures in orkut album. Sometimes, we have a lot of pictures to show in our orkut album but due to this restriction on number of picture uploads we could not show all we want to show in our orkut album. But now you can show unlimited number of pictures and photos using the new rss feed feature in orkut.

Sending a blank or invisible scrap

Open your friend’s scrapbook and the write anyone you wanted from the list given below:

for example, Copy and paste “http://www.desiclub.com/bollywood/photo_album/photoalbums/aamir_khan/aamir3.jpg” in scrapbook and then press ‘postscrap’. Now you will see the images as a scrap in your scrapbook.

Hiding your visits on the other’s profiles.

1) Go to ‘Setting’.
2) Click on ‘privacy’ tab and select hide profile visit.

How to set invisible mode in Gmail Chat

Yahoo chat has it, AIM has it and most other common internet messenger softwares has it, i am referring to the invisible mode available on these application.

GTalk as of now does not have an invisible mode option, however in an recent update to Gmail they have added this feature to GMail chat. But it won’t work if you are logged in simultaneously with Google Talk. So now you can be offline but also chat with friends who are online, completely invisible.

Also setting up your invisible mode in Gmail chat is also very simple, refer the adjoining image here, use the invisible option now available under the 'set status here' option.

Google Talk does not allow users to decide when their status changes to 'idle' and back. The result is that others can easily know whether or not you're at your computer. however there are some free softwares that can assist you to take control of your GTalk status.

Try gAlwaysIdle, it adds two new options to Google Talk, allowing you to change your status to be 'always idle' or 'never idle'. Most of us are aware of the benefits of subscribing to RSS feeds of various blogs and website. It keeps us posted on all the latest updates on the blog and by using RSS readers one need not visit original site... making life simpler. RSS readers like netvibes, google reader are some of the best and i use them very often. It took me some time to have a decent collection of blogs and website which post valuable and interesting articles.

As a blogger i always wanted to share these interesting articles to my readers, one option i had was to convert these RSS feed from those sites to HTML and then post it on my blog. This led me to do some research on some of the free tools available on the web.

So i managed to get some simple tools which can do the trick, using which i can convert RSS to HTML. These are my recommendation, try it out and post in your views/comments.

1. Wigitize: The best in the pack. This tool is very simple and very customizable. You copy the RSS feed URL here and then generate a code, which then can be pasted on your blog or website. I tried this with my blog's RSS feed and here is the generated code. By the way you are absolutely free to paste the below code on your blog.

2. Grazr: This site provide a simple widget which displays feed content on a webpage. This would be a good option in case looks and theme matter you the most. Here are two tricks I thought of sharing to all you people who like to surf the web from their workplace but don't want others to look at what they are browsing. In many companies employees are not allowed to use the internet during the work hours, however many employees still prefers to surf during their spare time. Here are the tricks, you could try..

Trick no.1: A browser called Maxthon, which is freely available on the net has a functionality call the 'Boss Key'. This is nothing but a feature to hide the browser. There is a shortcut to hide and unhide the browser Alt + ~ key combination like a toggle switch. The option can be found in File Menu. If you are not allowed to download this software from your workplace, transfer this via USB drive/CD. So now you can surf and use the 'Boss Key' to hide the browser.

Trick no.2: On the same lines as above, here we have an application called the 'Boss Key' which hides the active application, be it a browser, folder, application etc.. This software is freeware and released by EfreeSoft. All it does is it allows you to hide active program window immediately using a hot key. It's speed is brought to maximum to allow you react as quickly as possible to any threat that appears. You won't feel even a slight difference in the performance of your home or office computer after installing it.

What's the Difference between DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM?

Q. I have just installed a new DVD burner in my computer (a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105 internal drive) and am trying to figure out what kind of blank disks I should be using. There are apparently five different blank DVD formats. Do I want DVD-R? DVD-RW? or ?? Also, if I just want to burn lots of data onto a DVD disk, can I use my Roxio Toast Titanium to do so, or do I need to use a special DVD-friendly app like iDVD?

Ans: Well, there are really only two "families" of DVD at the moment (unless you want to count the red laser vs. blue laser stuff that's starting to come on to the market at the high end), and one "outcast". You've got the "minus" ("-") formats (DVD-R, DVD-RW) and the "plus" ("+") formats (DVD+R, DVD+RW), then there's the older DVD-RAM format that's harder to find these days. All of these are for data, of course -- all but the newest DVD video players will choke on those, in the same way early CD players choked on CD-R discs. A DVD-R is a write-once format: once you've burned the data onto that DVD platter, the disk is forever frozen with that information.

Add the "W" to that, and you'll find that DVD-RW can be erased or rewritten up to a thousand times. Seems kinda weird, but if you can do so, DVD-RW obviously has significant advantages over DVD-R. DVD-RAM was even more flexible, however, since it let you erase and rewrite sections of an existing DVD, something that you cannot do with DVD-RW. Moving to the plus side is where things get a bit confusing, because DVD+RW came before DVD+R. The plus formats have the same data storage capacity as the minus formats (4.7GB), but DVD+RW offers faster writing, better internal linking (a technical obscurity you don't have to worry about), and support for drag-and-drop desktop files, which makes it easy to compose the contents of a disk. DVD+R is a write-once format intended to be more compatible with more DVD players, though at this point it seems to be about even with DVD-R, which remains the most compatible computer-burned DVD format.

In your case, since your drive is a DVD-RW, you're effectively limited to DVD-R and DVD-RW format discs. Stay away from any of the "plus" formats, as those won't work with your drive (and being newer, they cost more anyway). As to whether you want to use DVD-R or DVD-RW, that depends on what you want to use them for. DVD-R is a write-once format, just like CD-R, and you can't erase the data once it's written. DVD-RW is rewritable, so you can use it somewhat like a 4.7GB floppy disc, for all intents and purposes. In general, I suggest that you use DVD-R for archival purposes -- stuff that isn't going to change, and DVD-RW for more fluid data. DVD-RW discs are more expensive than DVD-R discs, so that may also influence your decision. How do you confirm what format your drive works with? One way, if you're on a Mac, is to use the System Profiler application. You'll find this useful utility in Applications -> Utilities. Launch it, then click on the "ATA" item on the list. If you have an internal DVD burner, you'll see something like what I get: "PIONEER DVD-RW DVD-106D".

If it's an external DVD drive, you might find it in SCSI, USB or FireWire, depending on how you hook it up. As far as your second question, your data-burning application definitely has to be aware of the DVD format you want to use (i.e. DVD-R or DVD-RW in your case). For Windows, you can use GEAR for burning CDs, but you'd need to upgrade to GEAR Professional Edition to be able to burn both CDs and DVDs. Toast Titanium does burn DVD-R and DVD-RW so you should be set in that department.

Ans: There are hundreds of different variables that modern search engines consider when determining which of the thousands - or millions - of results should be presented in the top slots, one of which is definitely the domain name of the site. Other variables include the age of the domain registration, the last time the DNS record was changed, how recently the page was changed, how many other pages point to the page in question, how those other pages link to the page, whether the words in question appear in the title of the page, in a header, how frequently the key word or words appear in the text, and on and on and on.

Indeed, we don't actually know the exact formula and there's an entire industry of people trying their very best to figure it out and then remarket the specific tactics and layout suggested by their experimental data (and guesses). They're Search Engine Optimizer (SEO) specialists and while some of them are sharp marketing professionals, many are snake-oil salesmen and should be avoided at all costs.

Back to your question, though!
Do a search on Google and you'll notice that in addition to matching words in the brief description, Google will also often highlight the portion of the domain name that matches too.

I seem to recall that I've read about some applications for both Mac and Windows that let you capture a streaming audio source to a file so you can listen to it later, slice it up, mail an excerpt to your parents, whatever. Anyone have a clue what kind of software does this, and perhaps a few pointers to specific applications I could download?

Ans: I polled a couple of colleagues for help with this question and here's what I found out... One of my friends says that TotalRecorder will capture anything that plays to your speakers in Windows. There's also a utility floating around call ASFRecorder that will grab Microsoft audio streams straight off the net (violating the stream-only rule, I think). I think it violates (and predates) the DMCA, so it may be hard to find. (Hint: I've got it around here somewhere.) Comes with source code.

I don't know about a util for RealAudio, though. TotalRecorder works for it, but it has to go through another level of compression. Some of my friends also says that for the Mac, there's a freeware program called StreamRipperX that's worth checking out. Ambrosia also released a nice utility called Wire Tap, which records any audio going out of your Mac. Ritu shares that she's been using the Polderbit Sound Recirder -- It's a Windows program that can record anything that comes out of your speakers. Their web site doesn't really make this clear (maybe because it's translated from the Dutch), but it works fine and you get a 15-day free trial. Once you've captured the stream, the program also makes it easy to split the recording into tracks for recording as an audio CD. I usually use Windows Media Player to burn the CD.

In late June 2004, Affinity Engines filed suit against Google, claiming that Büyükkökten and Google based orkut on inCircle code. The allegation is based on the presence of 9 identical bugs in orkut that also exist in InCircle. Originally, the orkut community was felt to be elite, because its membership is by invitation only. However, at the end of July 2004 orkut surpassed the 1,000,000 member mark, and at the end of September it surpassed the 2,000,000 mark.

While the intended invitation method was e-mail between two acquaintances, invitations to orkut are obtainable via the web with a bit of diligence or eBay, just like Gmail invites.
Orkut's use as a social tool is complex, because various people frequently try to add strangers to their own pool of friends, more often than not just to increase the number indicating their number of friends next to their name in their profile. Many "add-me" communities exist, solely for this purpose. A large number of bogus, cloned, fake, invisible and "orphaned" profiles also exist.
As of September 13, 2006; there are 27,733,124 users on orkut.

Speed and reliability

As of September 2006, orkut often is unavailable, producing a "Bad, bad server. " error message — behavior consistent with that of an underpowered server under heavy load. The outages tend to occur during the day hours in the Americas, home of more than 80% of orkut users.

Iranian censorship

Orkut was very popular in Iran, but the website is blocked by the government. As they say, this is due to national security issues, as orkut users have the ability to spread messages rapidly, but the government says it's due to Islamic ethical issues about dating and match making. To get around this block, sites such as "orkutproxy.xom" (now defunct) were made for Iranian users. Other websites such as Groups likw Yahoo, Google have communities dedicated to receiving updates on the newest location of Iran's orkut proxy. Though it was once possible to bypass governmental blockage of orkut, the site has closed its HTTPS pages on all anonymous proxies. Now it is almost impossible for ordinary users to visit this site inside Iran.

In August 2006 UAE followed the footsteps of Iran in blocking the site.

Click on that option, write your comment and submit. Your testimonial will be shown below the profile of the member if approved by your friend.

You can delete testimonials which you wrote about your friends and those which your friends wrote about you. To delete any of these testimonials, you need to navigate to the testimonial page. Here the default page that opens is for the testimonials which you wrote about your friends. You can delete any of these testimonials by clicking delete button alongside the respective testimonials. If you want to delete the testimonials written by your friends for you, you need to navigate to the bottom of the page and you will see an option to view testimonials which your friends wrote about you. Back up Blogger Posts

Backup Your Posts - Bloggers Blogsend allows each of my blog posts to be automatically sent to my email address. So I have a back up of all my posts as individual emails. You can further create folders in your email account (as in Yahoo Mail) or apply labels (in Gmail), and create filters such that such emails can be collected in one place.
Back up your entire blogger blog - Bloggers provides detailed instructions to create a single file with all your posts which you may publish and then copy to your own computer for use as desired. Remember to save a copy of your existing template in a file on your computer as you will need to have it at hand after this process is completed. This is good for a one time backup, but is cumbersome to do if you back up very frequently. Also you might mess up some setting and disbale your blog is not done right.
Try third party back up tools - like the HTTrack Web site copier for Windows users and Webgrabber for Mac users. Each of these applications will create a fully working, interlinked local copy of your blog for browsing offline and easily allow you to back up. Remember it will take considerable time and internet bandwidth if you have a huge blog.

Back up Blog Template

Back up the template whenever you change it. Just copy and paste the entire template code into any simple text editor like Notepad or Wordpad and save file with name like ‘myblog-date.txt’. After a while you will have a series of such files organized by date. If for some reason your blog goes away, just copy and paste the teplate back into Blogger and republish.
If you have lost your template partly or fully - learn how to restore your blog template code and then back it up.

Back Up Blog Comments

Blogger has an option to send you an email when someone leaves a comment on your blog. This is located in Setting > Comments option in Blogger. This enables you to collect all your comments as individual emails, much like the blogsend posts emails mentioned above. Then you can file them all together as labels or in a email folder.
If you moderate comments, you can get all your comments as emails pending your approval. This email address can again be entered in Setting > Comments. If you do not want to save rejected comments as emails and recieve only published comments - then you can keep the comment moderation email address blank, while filling up the Comment Notification Address.
If you use Haloscan Comments instead, then anyway your Blogger comments are off and Haloscan is keeping track of backing up your comments. I am using Blogger comments featured now with comment moderation, word verification captchas to combat comment spam.

Make blog back ups a habit and you will remember this post when it saves your blog on a bad day!
